At last we have some publicity. The Bolton News has published 2 photos and an article about the presentation of our hanging to Hillside school.Wed 27th June ,page 23. Check it out!!!!

June Day school

Yesterday, we invited Tracey from the Rachel Kay Shuttleworth Trust at Gawthorpe Hall to visit.She brought along a wide range of pieces of lace from the Collection. We were able in some cases to handle these items but in all , to study very closely . So closely in fact that Tracey had brought along a microscope that was attached to her computer. We were also able to capture these items as photographs[for our own, not public use}

We studied , photographed, sketched and drooled over the pieces until lunch. Judith and Ann did us proud and we felt refreshed and ready for an afternoon lead by Gail McCardle. She reminded us how to take our designs rather further. She demonstrated , amongst other things,types of sketching and mono printing . We then had a play and pushed the barriers of our designs!!!Well at least I tried.

Our next challenge is to work with our designs to make a piece no bigger than 10 inches in any direction. This will be taken to Gawthorpe Hall for an exhibition and some of these pieces will then be chosen to be included in the Collection.

Please remember to bring your work ,at the latest to the October meeting.

June meeting

We began the June meeting with Ann presenting Barbara with her certificate for third prize in the Coats Anchor award at the NW Regional meeting. She also won a wonderful box of C/A goodies.

Then we had a short show and tell, where I passed around the Moroccan memories kaftan that I had made and Ann held up the bags that we had made at Lesley's felt class.

Barbara then gave her Mix to Match talk which was entertaining and illuminating, She showed us one of her very first pieces, a gift for her aunt and then

how she moved on and through City and Guilds and finally to her most recent work.She stated her love of the rose theme and how  preparatory work was never worthless as she might revisit a piece. She inspired us all explaining that due to her illness she was unable to work in quite the same way and now used only running stitch but still completed exquisite work. I don't think many members  actually believed her and so went up to check and study her work in detail.Barbara still had move to share but was conscious of the time constraints. She finished  so that we could distribute the new registration forms. Please don't ignore them. Contact me if help is needed. See you all at the EGM and meal in July, Val

Headquarters will be putting our subscription up by £2 in September.

Workbox magazine has increased the price by 50p due to higher postal charges and will now cost £2.55p from the next issue. As we pay in advance I will have to collect £3 the next time to cover this.

The members competition for the 2014 Regional Day will be “Black Magic” (2013 is entitled King Cotton)

The 2013 AGM will be held from 5^th – 7^th April at Cheltenham.

EXHIBITIONS & EVENTS

There is an exhibition of new work by 5 local artists at The Gallery, St Georges House, 2 St. Georges Road, Bolton from June 16^th (Free admission, open 8.30am – 3pm, Mon - Sat)

10 Plus Textiles have an exhibition on until 31^st August at The Changing Fashion Gallery in Stoke-on Trent, Mon – Sat 10am – 5pm and Sun 2 – 5pm. There is a leaflet for further details.

Out and about with our hanging

This morning Judith Ann and I visited Hillside special school in Longridge. We had coffee with the head teacher and then had a tour of the school. It was a very friendly place ,the staff were gentle and caring and  the children were happy to greet us .We spent some time admiring the art work displayed on the walls. However the reason for our visit was to present to the school our latest hanging.

Peter, Barbara's grandson “did the honours” and seemed really impressed both by the tactile nature and riot of colour. He even posed with Ann and the Head.

Out and about,Glossop

On Wednesday ,Barbara and I went to visit my Glossop Branch. It does seem a long way….3 hours there and back. However they are a very friendly group and I do feel that I am getting to know a number of members. We were also fortunate the the speaker was Barbara Jepson. She gave an account of her stitching life, how she progressed and what she does now.

Barbara began by working with felt. {i was at a felt making class last night} but has developed her craft. She now produces a batik background ,  applique  and hand stitched. So I wonder… if my felt develops , might I one day produce work like this?

Out and about,Horwich Resources Centre

Ann asked Barbara and I to represent the Guild at a celebration for the Queens Jubilee this evening. We dressed in 50s costumes and/or red white and blue and arrived as requested at 6.30. The room was festooned with bunting, the tables with union flag tablecloths,napkins and plates. We were shown to a table that consisted of councillors and I sat next to Sue who visited us at The Rivington exhibition when she was Mayor. In the conversation, she mentioned the scissors that we had given her and said what a lovely time she had with us.Janet welcomed everyone and introduced the current  Mayor of  Horwich. We were served sandwiches, cheese jam and SPAM[which was really tasty]individual trifles and old fashioned cakes.

After tea , Janet read our questions for a fifties quiz. Barbara did a lot better than me  but  being a lot older. she had an advantage!!!! { This will tell if Barbara reads the Blog} Anyhow neither of us won.

The women's land army then arrived and we reminisced as we sang along to all the oldies.Flags were waved and some guests joined in the dancing.Again both Barbara and I had to explain to guests about the Market Hanging  which looked glorious surrounded by flags and bunting. We were proud to be there to represent you all.

Booking forms are now available for the Summer meal at Ridgemont.

The list is available for the next workshop (23^rd June) This is 2 part with a study visit with Tracy Gill bringing lace from the RBKS collection for inspiration in the morning and an art & design workshop with Gail McArdle in the afternoon. Everyone attending must produce a piece of work (Max. size 25cm x 25cm) for submitting to Gawthorpe for selection for exhibiting.

A lovely evening on Tuesday. We welcomed back several members who had been really poorly for months and give them our continued best wishes.

After the usual announcements , Ann invited Barbara to show us the piece that won third at the NW Regional day. She said little about it but reminded us that she would speak in much greater detail at our next meeting.

Jenny also brought along her most recent piece , based on her family history. She hoped that it might inspire us , ready for the Molly’s Cup competition.

The main reason for the meeting, was however , to hear Sandra McFarlane speak about ”Ching  Soo’s grand daughter”. This very personal story was illustrated with Sandra's amazing Japanese embroideries.

I think this was my favourite.
